George Russell sees Mercedes' performances in both the Spanish and Canadian Grand Prix as proof that his team is on the right track, as the circuits are so different in nature. However, the 25-year-old Briton sees another big challenge for the team if it is to eventually close the gap to Red Bull Racing.

For Russell, the Canadian GP ended in disappointment after he crashed through his own mistake, causing damage to his W14. Initially, he was able to continue and managed to make his way back to the points, but eventually the damage proved too severe and Mercedes decided to call him back to the pits.

Good omen for future Mercedes

Nevertheless, Russell takes positive points from the Formula 1 weekend in Montreal, given the race pace his team showed both in Barcelona and at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "I think going from Barcelona to here, two quite contrasting circuits, bodes well for the future," he is quoted by Crash.net.

Currently, Mercedes is battling Aston Martin for second place in the constructors' championship, but the German team wants more. "Of course, as a team, we’re looking for more than just second best. We need to close that gap to Red Bull, but [our pace here] definitely shows we’re on the right path," Russell said.
