Eddie Jordan admits he was initially "worried" about whether George Russell would stand his ground in a direct duel with Lewis Hamilton, but says he is now long and wide convinced of the 25-year-old Briton's abilities.

Jordan changed his mind about Russell

"I was super concerned," Jordan says in the Formula for Success podcast. Meanwhile, the former Formula One team boss is convinced. "George has absolutely surpassed everything that I thought he could be, and he is a brilliant and potential future world champion."

He continued: "If he's in the right position in the right car, he's got everything. However, Lewis, he's upped his game. He's found that Mojo again." Jordan further calls what Mercedes is showing "encouraging" since it introduced a major update package at the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

Jordan: 'The F1 championship is over'

At the same time, Jordan also sees Mercedes' competition not sitting still. "They still have a bit to catch up with the Aston Martin, which still looks very strong, and is still a couple of tenths away from the Red Bull, and I don't see the Red Bull suffering in the future. I think the championship is over. It's sad to say, but that's what I think. I can't see anyone touching Max," the 75-year-old Irishman concluded.

Russell currently has to concede 37 points to teammate Hamilton in the championship, but also suffered two stoppages in the first eight races of the 2023 F1 season. In the mutual qualifying duels, the standings are even between the two Mercedes drivers.
