Felipe Massa believes in Mercedes' evolution by the end of this season
- Vicente Soella
Since 2021, Felipe Massa has been competing in Stock Car racing for the Lubrax | Podium Stock Car Team. The Brazilian, who raced in Formula 1 between 2002 and 2017, gave an interview to GPblog and, among other things, spoke about what he thinks about the future of Mercedes.
Mercedes has dominated Formula 1 for 8 years. Between 2014 and 2021, the German team won all the constructors' championships and, with the exception of 2021, all the drivers' championships, with Lewis Hamilton as its main star.
On the right track
In a recent interview with GPblog, Massa talked a bit about the moment that the German team has been facing. "Mercedes has been suffering in the last two years if you compare it to the team and the car they had before, but I think they have shown in the last few races that they have the ability to fight," began the former Ferrari driver. "They have shown in the last few races that they can have, yes, a more important road ahead. They had changes there, changed the car and ended up showing results."
The Brazilian, who currently holds the position of Formula 1 Ambassador, makes a bet for this season. "I believe Mercedes should come 2nd this year in the constructors' championship," he said.
Will it still compete with Red Bull in 2023?
Felipe Massa expects Toto Wolff's team to evolve a lot still this season, but not enough to challenge defending champions Red Bull. "Maybe they will have a more competitive team [still in 2023]; maybe to the point of fighting with Red Bull next year, not this year. I think with the work that they have been doing, they show the ability that they have to maybe find the right way to fight for wins and titles in a period further down the line," he concluded.
