Wolff sees no chance in battle with Verstappen: 'Not even in dreams'
- Toby McLuskie
Toto Wolff does not believe Max Verstappen can be beaten in Austria. According to the Mercedes team boss, they need to focus on the spots behind the Dutchman while working hard to improve the car.
With six wins in the first eight races, it is clear that Verstappen is the favourite prior to each weekend. Only Sergio Perez can really challenge Verstappen, as the Mexican also has the RB19 at his disposal. However, in the past three Grands Prix, Verstappen's teammate did not make the most of it.
Red Bull too strong
In any case, the competition has little hope of victory at the Red Bull Ring. ''Even in the place of dreams, you have to be a realist. That will take a while because the Red Bull is the best car in the field and Max's driving skills are also too good,'' Wolff is laudatory to the Kronen Zeitung.
Mercedes did take a step forward and that was evident in the last few races. In Spain and Canada, the W14 was a lot more competitive after the updates and it is a car that drivers also like a lot more. The track in Spielberg should suit the car even better, so Wolff does hope for a good result.
Although Red Bull is unbeatable for Mercedes, the Austrian believes anything is possible behind the Red Bulls. ''Basically, the ranking should remain the same. Red Bull are clearly ahead, behind them it can swing in all directions between Ferrari, Aston Martin and us,'' Wolff concluded.
