Albon back to Red Bull? 'Horner is always messaging me’
Alexander Albon is in a rich vain of form currently at Williams. The British Thai has greatly impressed in the last few races and is, therefore, more often mentioned in a sentence with Re Bull, his former race team, recently. Albon is happy with where he sits, he tells Motorsport.com.
After a year and a half at the Austrian racing stable, Albon learned in the winter of 2020 that the following year there was no place for him as a driver at Red Bull. Sergio Perez would take his place in the team. However, the two-time podium winner would be allowed to stay on as a test and reserve driver. The young driver showed he had the talent but really struggled in comparison to the speed of teammate Max Verstappen.
After a year in the lull at Red Bull, Britain's Williams applied for his services. It marked his comeback on the grid. Since then, Albon has seemed better than his car every week, and no one at Williams is talking about George Russell, who left for Mercedes. While Alexander Albon pulled off a fantastic seventh-place finish in Canada, Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is in dramatic form. Did the Austrians perhaps let Albon go too early after all?
Messaging with Horner
Albon is not thinking of returning. He is happy with where he is: "You can see this isn't a short-term situation. I am here for the long run. And I'm really enjoying working with the team, being where I am." Yet the Thai still keeps in touch with former team boss Christian Horner. "Christian is always messaging me, telling me good job and all this kind of thing. It's always nice to have that relationship with an old team principal boss," Albon states.
He believes he is a better driver now than in his time at Red Bull. "I'm mentally stronger, but I'm also more experienced and more mature. So it was always going to be easier. I do feel like I'm driving the best I've driven."
