Max Verstappen has won the Austrian Grand Prix. In a chaotic race marked by numerous track limit violations, the Dutchman managed to secure 26 points for the world championship. Sergio Perez managed to overtake quite a few more drivers and finished in third place.

Ferrari and Red Bull strong

The two Ferraris behind the reigning world champion of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz managed to collect a combined 30 points. Leclerc finished in second place and Sainz in fourth. Behind the Red Bull cars and the Ferraris, it was Lando Norris who finished fifth.

Drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Norris tried to lap other drivers there because of the track limits via board radio. Many drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly and Sainz already received penalties of five or even 10 seconds. Nico Hulkenberg finished early and was the only dropout in the race.

Post-race penalties change results after protest

It was Aston Martin that protested against the result a few hours after the race concluded. The team assumed that not all track limit violations had been recorded and that not all drivers had received a time penalty as a result. The stewards then came to the conclusion that these reports had not been processed, with there turning out to be 1200 cases of possible violations. The stewards spent half the evening analyzing these reports, and in the end, there were indeed 83 violations that were not penalised during the race.

It was eight drivers who ignored the track limits enough to receive a penalty. Alpine's Esteban Ocon was given a time penalty as a result of four track limit violations. The Frenchman was already out of the points but still dropped from twelve to fourteen. Carlos Sainz was more unlucky. His time penalty dropped him from fourth to sixth, and Lewis Hamilton also lost a place. Aston Martin, who protested the result and caused these changes, saw both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll move forward. The England team was thus a winner of the protest.
