Wait for new contract Hamilton will be longer: 'Still confident'
The wait for Lewis Hamilton's contract extension at Mercedes continues. The Briton and the German team have been in talks for ages, reporting time and again that all is well, but the signatures have not (yet) been made. No news can be expected in the run-up to the British Grand Prix either, that much is now clear.
Toto Wolff has told Sky Sports that there will be no announcement in the coming days. It would not be about money, but 'other topics' that need to be sorted out. Hamilton's moaning over the radio during the Austrian Grand Prix plays no significant role, the Mercedes team boss believes.
'Everything discussed in detail'
According to Wolff, there was no underlying message for Hamilton in his radio message. Nor did the words have any impact on contract negotiations, Wolff said: 'You should hear us talking on the phone and meeting each other, that was nothing. No not at all [will it have an impact], we've had a bad spell of a weekend all of us in the team and that just makes us stronger."
Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Wolff said Hamilton's new contract was only about details. Some three weeks on, there is still no white smoke. According to Wolff, 'they' [Hamilton] want to discuss everything in detail, so it is all taking longer than hoped. Whether there is any doubt that Hamilton will stay? "I'm still very confident [about a new contract]," Wolff said.
