Mexico applauds Sergio Perez after third place: 'Gave a lesson in racing'
After three not-so-strong weekends, Sergio Perez managed to finish on the podium once again in Austria. Max Verstappen's teammate at Red Bull Racing had to come a long way, as his dramatic qualifying run meant he started from spot 15. In the end, Perez reached the third spot of the podium. That led to jubilation in the Mexican media.
Esto, the country's leading sports medium, headlined: 'Checo Perez a master of comebacks; in Austria he proved it again'. The website then cited that Perez was struggling with his health at the beginning of the weekend AND had a poor result in qualifying, which could be ingredients for a bad race.
'Perez had great comeback'
"But the Mexican gave a lesson in racing, used the advantage of the speed of his RB19 and had a great comeback at the Austrian Grand Prix," wrote a journalist from the website. "For many it could have been a surprise, but for those who know him, what he did on the Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg is nothing new. Indeed, the man from Guadalajara is a master of comebacks. He knows how to sail against the current."
Esto then listed his 'most fantastic comebacks'; Spain 2023, Australia 2023, Shakir 2020 and Azerbaijan in 2018. While Perez indeed worked his way up to the podium, he saw Verstappen further out in the championship standings last weekend.
