Perez believes new Pirelli tyres will favour "a few teams"
- Ludo van Denderen
At Silverstone, Pirelli will finally introduce the new tyres that will be in place for the rest of this season. These tyres have a modified construction. During two free practice sessions in Barcelona, teams could already test them briefly, now they will be used in anger. Whether they will be a success? For now, there are mostly a lot of question marks, pondered by Sergio Perez.
The '23 cars are faster than originally expected. The current cars are reportedly already producing the amount of downforce that Pirelli only expected by the end of the season. Therefore, the Italian company has decided to introduce a stronger tyre. However, the composition of the new tyres does not change and so it remains otherwise identical to the current tyres.
Different character of tyre
Sergio Perez was asked prior to the British Grand Prix about his expectations of this tyre? "I think this tyre construction is done to favour a few teams," the Mexican told us, pointing out that only time will tell who those teams are. "I think someone is going to make it better. I don't know if it's us or other teams, but certainly there is a characteristic change in the tyre, especially in the high speed we feel. So it will be interesting to see what happens also with the degradation because we haven't done much work in that."
Lance Stroll also briefly addressed the new Pirelli tyres. "I don't have much more to add," the Aston Martin driver said initially. "But we have good information from Andrew [Alessi, Head of Technical Operations]. I will see tomorrow how they feel."
