Horner saw Verstappen build lead: 'Then that was all negated'
Christian Horner has every reason to be satisfied after the British Grand Prix. He saw Max Verstappen cruise to victory, although it was a less dominant ride than we are now almost used to in the 2023 Formula 1 season.
For Red Bull Racing, Verstappen's victory at Silverstone marked another fine milestone. The Austrian team recorded its 11th win in a row, equalling McLaren' s record from 1988. The same team was on Verstappen's tail from qualifying on Saturday, making a strong comeback after a difficult period.
Horner: 'Max was brilliant again'
"A big day for the whole team. Max was once again brilliant. The whole team nailed it strategically. To get that 11th victory in a row to match, ironically, McLaren here today from 1988 is an incredible achievement for the whole team," Horner told Viaplay.
Verstappen did struggle a bit with the tyres this time. The softs in particular did not work as well for the Dutchman, but on the mediums it was not all that bad, according to Horner. "Once the temperatures had come in on the mediums, he was pretty happy on that tyre and he could build pretty much a 10 second lead," the 49-year-old Briton continued.
"Then that was all negated, and we had a choice, the hard or the soft. We felt that the soft for the restart was the way to go. He broke the DRS immediately on the first lap and then was able to manage the race pretty well from there," he added.
Perez needs to be there again in Hungary
For Sergio Perez, it is high time he had another good qualifying session, and as far as Horner is concerned, there is no reason why that should not be the case at the Hungary GP. Asked if we will see the Mexican start in the top ten again there, he replied, "Yes, for sure. Top five."
