Alonso regrets nothing: 'Nobody has a crystal ball'
- Cas van de Kleut
Fernando Alonso has not always made the right choices in his career when it comes to choosing teams. Last winter he made the switch to Aston Martin, and this one did work out well. The Spaniard spoke at the press conference ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix about his opinion on the choices he made in his career.
The now 41-year-old driver has had an exciting career. In 2005 and 2006, he became world champion with Renault, before moving to McLaren, where he found himself in a championship battle with teammate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen. The latter eventually took the world title that year. Alonso went back to Renault, only this turned out differently than hoped. From 2010 to 2014, the two-time world champion drove for Ferrari. In 2010 and 2012, he lost the championship to Sebastian Vettel by just a few points. After an unsuccessful spell at McLaren, Alonso decided to leave Formula 1 after 2018.
Alonso's move to Aston Martin
In 2021, the Spaniard returned to Formula 1 with his old love Renault, driving for Alpine. Immediately in his first season, he grabbed another podium in Qatar. Nevertheless, he made the switch to Aston Martin. This was a move that many people had their doubts about. "The last decision, which for everyone's opinion was the worst one, to go for Aston Martin. It was the best one, arguably, of my career. That just shows the difficulty of choosing teams and the lack of knowledge that everyone has at home," Alonso explained.
Alonso has no regrets about choices in F1
Despite a few lesser choices, the Spaniard does not regret anything: "I would not change anything. No one has a crystal ball to know what is the performance of the teams."
