Verstappen grins: 'Hopefully I won't be stuck on 44 wins'
Max Verstappen is enjoying the current season with Red Bull Racing. The Austrian racing team have not been beaten yet this season, and looking at the 33-second lead in Hungary for Verstappen, it does not look like the competition will catch up with the RB19s in 2023 either. However, Verstappen is keen to stress that Red Bull also need to work incredibly hard for these performances and that wins really are not always as easy as they might seem.
Success Red Bull does not come easy
Together with Red Bull, Verstappen is in a flow where they just seem to be able to win. "Of course, it's really enjoyable to work with the whole team and to have this kind of success. I think people probably forget how tough it is to win 12 in a row. Even when you have the fastest car, it's easy to make mistakes or have an awful weekend."
The Dutchman continued, "I think so far, of course, we had weekends where probably the gap was a bit smaller than we would have liked. But then also we had a few weekends where we surprised ourselves and had a really good race, for example. So yeah, I hope that we can just keep that momentum going, keep on trying to learn from the car, from the upgrades we're bringing to the car towards the end of the season and also going into next year."
Whether he has experienced this level of dominance before in his career? "These days are rare," Verstappen is honest. "I think last year's Spa, for example, was probably pretty similar. But then of course, I had to start from the back. So yeah, very rare. Normally it's not that easy or straightforward."
What else is in store?
For Verstappen, this marks his 24th win since the start of last season. He was asked where this is going to end. "Hopefully, I don't stay in 44. That would be terrible. Yeah, I need to get 45 quickly," Verstappen laughed.
