Perez: 'At Red Bull the pressure is always higher in that regard'

Sergio Perez is exactly halfway through the Formula 1 season in second place in the world championship. With that, Max Verstappen's team-mate is heading for his best-ever final ranking in a World Championship, but not a very successful one yet despite two wins. Perez is very changeable and he is trying to work on that.

"I think certainly after Monaco I lost some confidence because the way my crash happened, I did lose a bit of confidence with the car and that put me back. I have my psychology and that's something that I work on and other than that I think it's just how the sport is. You have good moments, bad moments but always when you are at Red Bull the pressure is a lot higher in that regard," Perez acknowledged ahead of Belgium's Grand Prix weekend.

The Mexican also feels from the outside that expectations are tremendously high. As a Red Bull driver, you are always under a magnifying glass, he maintains. "You have a bad session and then you have to answer questions about your future straight away so it's just how it is but luckily enough I'm in a good place and I just have to focus on making sure I enjoy my job and enjoy the weekend."

Trial and error for Perez

The past 12 months have been months of high highs and deep lows for Perez. Incidentally, this is not completely new to him. "Oh yeah, I've had it before and it's just how it is. We operate in such small details that sometimes if everything isn't perfect it can mean being on the podium or being out of the points," he explained.

People at home don't always understand that in the veteran driver's view: "Obviously, they don't see how many details are involved in races and that can make the difference between having a great race or having a very poor race but it can happen to anyone, to any driver in Formula 1," Perez responds soberly.
