At the start of the season, Fernando Alonso was a regular on the F1 podium, now the Spaniard and his teammate Lance Stroll have to pull out all the stops to finish in the points at all. Mercedes, Ferrari and also McLaren seem to have surpassed the green cars.

Alonso recently told the media that Aston Martin has 'the fifth car' on the grid. Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, where the British team finished fifth and ninth, team boss Mike Krack was asked by GPblog and others whether he agreed with his Spanish veteran's observation? Krack responded with a single word: "Yes."

Aston Martin believes in turnaround

Before the summer break, it was almost every week a different team that was Red Bull Racing's main competitor - incidentally well behind the Austrians each time. At Spa, for example, Ferrari was strong, while the two races before that McLaren managed to reach the podium. Aston Martin is confident that they too can be the second team on the grid again after the summer break.

"Yes," Krack said about that. "Yeah. I mean under normal circumstances, you would say to gain three positions in such a field, over the short time of 11 events, it’s very hard and very ambitious. On the other hand, the gaps are very small. We have seen how much we have lost, and I think the most important is to recover that and try to recover a little bit more."

However the year ends for Aston Martin, the team has made huge strides. Already, Alonso managed to drive to the podium six times, twice of which were second. He finished directly behind Max Verstappen in Monaco and Canada. In the last four races, the Spaniard did not come close to the podium.
