Ferrari disappoints in 2023. After last season, Ferrari seemed to be virtually back at the top of Formula 1, but this year only a podium seems to be the highest achievable. Ferrari aerodynamicist Enrico Cardile argues that it is clear to the Scuderia what went wrong in 2023.

Ferrari struggles in 2023

Ferrari is having a very tough time in 2023 with the SF-23. The car is often unpredictable, making driving the Ferrari car difficult for Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. The Italian racetrack also often struggles with tyre wear, which often results in a drop in speed in the race compared to qualifying. Over one lap, Ferrari is in fact fast, as Leclerc showed in Azerbaijan. Here, the Monegasque took pole position.

Ferrari knows what is wrong

"For us, it's crystal clear what we did wrong with the car. We know where the weaknesses are, it’s clear," Cardile says. For 2024, these weaknesses obviously need to be improved. "It's not a matter of understanding what we should do. Now, for the future, it's a matter of delivering a good product which will cope with the targets we have. We know what we have to do. It's a matter of doing."

"The other point is this car is consistent during the rest of weekend in terms of behavior. But sometimes this behavior changes from track to track. In Hungary, we had a difficult time. In Belgium, the performance was back. So sometimes this happens. But then during the weekend, the car behavior should be consistent. On this track, we dedicated FP1 to specific test to better tune our tools, to better operate the car this year and to have data to improve the behavior of the car next year."
