Gasly looks forward to Monza: 'Zandvoort gives confidence'
- Toby McLuskie
Pierre Gasly was back on the podium in Formula 1 last weekend for the first time since 2021. The Frenchman came in early for intermediates at the start of the race, which eventually put him on podium course. Due to the good weekend in the Netherlands, Gasly goes to Italy with a lot of confidence.
Gasly on podium at Zandvoort
Gasly was in fourth and fifth place for much of the race at Zandvoort but eventually finished third due to Sergio Perez's time penalty. The Mexican drove into the pit lane at too high a speed. Gasly was also sort of on the podium in Belgium, here the Alpine driver took third place in the sprint race. Interestingly, both of these third places were achieved in a race with rainy conditions.
According to Gasly, it is no coincidence that both top results were achieved in such conditions. "Last weekend in Spa, we had a good top three finishing in the sprint in intermediate conditions, like in the wet. Again, today [Sunday in Zandvoort], we managed to make the best out of these conditions. There is a clear trend that the car seems to work a bit better in the wet. Now we've got to improve and keep working because we're still kind of slightly further back in the dry. But there were definitely some good signs of pace today and we need to build from there."
Gasly looks ahead to Monza
The weekend at Zandvoort gives Gasly a good feeling for the upcoming Grand Prix weekend in Monza. "It does give some confidence. I think it's definitely coming more together with the team, it's obviously this sort of adaptation part since the start of the year, trying to learn from each other.." The Frenchman swapped AlphaTauri for Alpine this season.
