Alpine confirms: 'In negotiations with Schumacher for '24''
- Ludo van Denderen
The rumours have been going around for some time, but Alpine comes with the confirmation: the French want to strengthen their team with Mick Schumacher. If it is up to Alpine, the German will become one of the regular drivers for the team in the World Endurance Championship(WEC).
The chances of Mick Schumacher getting a seat in Formula 1 in 2024 are small. Only Williams has a spot, in case Logan Sargeant's commitment is not renewed. Liam Lawson is in the picture to be loaned to Williams by Red Bull. No position in Formula 1 seems to be a possibility for Schumacher, who previously drove for Haas F1, apart from his current reserve role at Mercedes.
Famin confirms negotiations
Bruno Famin confirmed on Friday that Schumacher is in the picture to come to the French team: "It's true that we are talking with Mick about the possibility of racing in our endurance programme with the A424. It would be a good opportunity for both parties, I think but for the time being, we are just talking and hopefully, we will organise a test soon," said the Alpine F1 team boss, who is also the boss of the French brand's entire motorsport division.
Tests for Doohan and Martins with '21 Alpine
Alpine currently has two talented drivers in Formula 2. It does not look like they will move on to Formula 1 anytime soon. Although Jack Doohan was predicted to have a bright future, the Australian is struggling this season. Famin did not write him off after all: "It's true that his second season has been a bit difficult. He made the two very good wins but for the first part of the season, he was not happy at all with his car. The car has improved a lot now. Of course, it's going to be difficult for him to be champion."
"And we have also a second very good driver in the Academy with Victor Martins, he’s in his rookie year, very good as well. I think, of course, the idea is to see how both of them will keep going, and keep improving. They were both testing the A521 this week. Then we are trying to give them as much experience as possible and we will see what we can do with Jack of course but maybe also with Victor. But they are part of the family," Famin said.
