Hamilton on fight with Russell: 'Needed to work as a team'
It was an exciting race for Mercedes. Toto Wolff was not at the track, but he will no doubt have been watching the fight between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with his bottom pinched. Hamilton revealed to Sky Sports that he was not happy with his teammate's actions.
The Mercedes teammates fought hard in the opening stages of the race. In the end, it appeared that Russell was going for a one-stop, while Hamilton would stop twice. It worked out better for the seven-time world champion than for his teammate, with Hamilton finishing fifth and Russell seventh.
Hamilton critical of Russell
Despite getting a better result, Hamilton was not happy with his teammate: "We should have swapped around earlier, and I should have got as far ahead as possible to get the gap as big as we could to the Ferrari. He (Russell) was trying to fight me. He was damaging his tyres, and I think it just made it all complicated."
"The fact is, we are not fighting each other in the team championship. As drivers, it is not important where we are. What is important is that one of us finishes ahead of the Ferrari and to keep the position. Today, we really needed to work as a team," continued the seven-time world champion.
