Contention | Perez is still going to lose P2 in drivers' championship this year
- Sam Godber
Sergio Perez had a disappointing weekend in Japan. The Mexican was involved in a lot of incidents and was also penalised for two of them. Perez is currently second in the World Championship with a 33-point lead over Lewis Hamilton, who does take his points every weekend. Therefore, the statement: 'Perez is still going to lose P2 in drivers' championship this year'.
Perez is in moderate form compared to Verstappen in 2023. The Mexican knows he has to start looking for answers. "Verstappen can adapt very quickly. I struggle a bit more with that. As a result, he managed to get more out of the car and also to do it every weekend," Perez told this weekend.
Will Hamilton or Alonso overtake Perez yet?
Hamilton, along with Max Verstappen, is the only driver who has managed to take points in every Grand Prix weekend this season. Perez failed to do so in Japan for the second time this year, as the Red Bull Racing driver also scored zero points in Monaco. In Japan, the gap between the two drivers narrowed by 10 points due to Perez's failure. In Singapore, the gap was also reduced by Hamilton, then by as many as 12 points.
Another contender for P2 is Fernando Alonso. The Aston Martin driver is 49 points clear of Perez in the championship. That Alonso will still take over Perez's second spot in the World Championship, however, seems less likely given Aston Martin's lesser form over the past three races, but nothing is out of the question in Formula 1.
Red Bull never picked up one-two in World Cup
Interestingly, despite several dominant cars, Red Bull never managed to grab a one-two in the drivers' championship. Even in the dominant years like 2011 and 2013, the Austrian constructor did not manage it and last year Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc put a stop to that. Can Hamilton do the same this year?
