Marko corrects interviewer after question about Hamilton
- Toby McLuskie
Red Bull Racing was once again the strongest in Qatar, at least Max Verstappen. Indeed, Sergio Perez scored just one point for the championship in the sprint weekend in Qatar. This leaves the battle between Lewis Hamilton and the Mexican for the second spot in the championship. However, Hamilton crashed in the Grand Prix, missing a chance to catch up. Helmut Marko gave an interviewer a slap on the wrist after a question about the seven-time world champion's crash.
Marko with striking answer to question on Hamilton
Hamilton started the Qatar Grand Prix from third position on soft tyres. Ahead of him started teammate George Russell, but the Briton was on medium tyres. Mercedes did foresee Hamilton overtaking his teammate quickly due to the tyre difference, but that overtaking resulted in a crash. The seven-time champion steered in too early and did not give enough space to Russell and that ended up costing Hamilton the race itself.
Marko was asked by oe24 about the crash between the two Mercedes drivers in the following way: "Toto Wolff was probably annoyed enough by the Mercedes drivers' crash while working at home. Now Hamilton is apparently suddenly starting to make mistakes too?" To this, the Red Bull adviser gave the following, striking, reply: "Can I please correct that? Now he is starting to admit mistakes." The Austrian did not elaborate further on the question.
Wolff saw no talent in Verstappen
Marko also sneered at Wolff, according to Red Bull adviser Toto Wolff preferred Esteban Ocon to Verstappen. "Also, Mr Wolff said at the time that the talent [of Verstappen] could not be seen and he contracted Ocon." The Frenchman was long part of Mercedes' junior programme but currently drives for the French Alpine team.
