Hamilton has completely opposite feeling to Verstappen: "Had so much fun"
After a very long and delayed opening day to the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton has said he "had so much fun today" when out on the Las Vegas Street Circuit during an extended FP2 session.
FP2 was extended to 90 minutes after FP1 was cancelled after just nine minutes of action. This was because Carlos Sainz ran over a loose manhole cover, which caused significant damage to his Ferrari and highlighted many issues with the track quality.
As a result, the session was delayed for over two hours, and while it was delayed, all 30 manhole covers were checked and reinforced so they did not come loose in FP2. After all those checks, the session got underway at 2am local time.
Hamilton enjoyed Vegas after Verstappen's 'clown' remarks
Coming to Vegas has posed questions, and while some drivers, like Verstappen, have not really enjoyed all the theatre surrounding the race weekend in the gambling city, others have found it quite enjoyable.
Hamilton has been one of those drivers, and even after the late finish and the major delays, the seven-time World Champion was happy with how everything felt out on the track. Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton said, "We're travelling at some serious speeds out there. It's incredibly fast. I had so much fun today, and I'm so glad we did get to run again. Obviously, not great what happened in FP1, but they did a great job of fixing it."
"It's massively challenging. Even though they've got the long straights, there are not really a lot of places to overtake because the grip is so low. Qualifying position will be really important. Degradation is going to be key. But I had a blast. Everyone's struggling with jet lag and all that stuff. I felt really great. I just watched a movie in between the break. I'm ready to go again."
Hamilton excited for qualifying
The Brit struggled in Brazil last time out, only managing to finish P8 at one of his favourite tracks, and he was looking forward to finishing with his W14 car after this season. However, after finishing the 90-minute FP2 session, Hamilton said the car's balance "was not too bad."
"I think when we're all out on similar tyres, I don't think we're too far off. Obviously, everyone was having some graining, and people were running out of tyres. But, everyone was, I think, in a similar boat."
We're really low downforce, so you're sliding through a lot of the low-speed corners and also the high-speed corners. There is not a huge amount of load because you need the straight-line speed. And then the low temperatures, I'm sure, are also having an effect on it."
