Huge tension: who will take the Formula 2 championship in Abu Dhabi?
While the battle for the championship in Formula 1 is already over, there is still plenty of excitement in Formula 2. Theo Pourchaire has the best chance to take home the title, but Frederik Vesti managed to get a good result during the sprint race on Saturday, winning both the race and driving the fastest lap.
The difference in the championship is now 16 points between Vesti and Pourchaire, after the Frenchman finished seventh, taking just two points. The number two in the championship grabbed the maximum points possible with 11 points, and is therefore closing in on the junior Alfa Romeo driver.
Who will win the F2 championship?
In the main race on Sunday, there are still some points to be distributed. Vesti starts from P9, while Pourchaire gets to start from P14. The Frenchman must be careful, as his rival, who is a junior driver with Mercedes, may already have enough for third place if he also picks up the fastest lap. The Dane has taken more wins than Pourchaire, and would therefore be at an advantage if it comes to that. However, it is essential for Vesti that his rival does not earn any points. Otherwise, third place will not be enough for him.
If Vesti finishes second, Pourchaire must at least finish ninth and take the fastest lap. If the Frenchman comes eighth, he does not have to take the fastest lap. Should Vesti win the race, things will be a lot harder for Pourchaire. If so, the Frenchman will have to finish at least fifth.
