Which driver is worth the best value for money? It might shock you!
- Toby McLuskie
That Formula 1 drivers get paid an awful lot, we already knew. But how much do you actually get back for all that money? PlanetF1.com grabbed the calculator and looked at which driver earns the most championship points in relation to how much they get paid. And that provides some nice insights.
Last on the rankings is Kevin Magnussen. The Dane enjoys a $5 million salary and has scored just 3 points. Over $1.6 million per point in the championship. An expensive investment for the Haas team. Above them are Valtteri Bottas and Logan Sargeant. Both are good for $1 million per point but there is a small difference: Bottas gets Sargeant's salary tenfold.
Best-paid driver at spot 15
Lewis Hamilton is at spot 15 in the rankings. With a salary of $50 million, Mercedes has cost $229,700 per point. A big blow for the Mercedes team who are obviously used to getting more points. Then we jump to number 13: Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver rose above his teammate Sainz, making him worth over 116 thousand dollars per point. His teammate is much higher on the list.
Max Verstappen in the top 10
With about the same salary as Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen manages to creep into the top 10 just above Lando Norris. Verstappen has managed to score so many points this year that Red Bull's team has paid him less than a tonne per point achieved. A handsome achievement with a salary of $55 million. Carlos Sainz is in spot seven with 60 thousand dollars per point. At number four, Sergio Perez. With a fifth of his teammate's salary, he manages to earn 35 thousand dollars per point.
Top three with two Aston Martins
The number three on the list is Lance Stroll. With a salary of $2 million, he managed to earn $27 thousand per point. His teammate manages to be just above that at the second spot. With a salary of 5 million dollars and 206 points, you end up with almost 25 thousand dollars per point with Fernando Alonso. Now, the driver at the top of the list... none other than Oscar Piastri. This season, he collected 97 points, as well as a sprint pole and victory. He is also the first driver since Lewis Hamilton to achieve multiple podiums in his first season. A salary of $2 million means over $20 thousand for every point gained. McLaren certainly has earned back the money they've spent on the young Australian.
