Could Mercedes' season get any worse? Yes it could!
- Ludo van Denderen
With a second place in the constructors' championship, Mercedes managed to maximise, behind the unapproachable Red Bull. Place two is not what the German team is in Formula 1 for, as much was made clear during interviews by team boss Toto Wolff in recent weeks. Next year, Mercedes wants revenge, although he also indicated that overtaking Red Bull will be a near-impossible feat.
No wins, no world titles and a lot of lost prestige. So a season to quickly forget for Mercedes. And then there was the final test on Tuesday in which George Russell put his W14 into the wall after a (probable) technical failure. Then when you think it can't get any worse, it turns out it can.
While mechanics were clearing out the Abu Dhabi garage, one of the team's staff had lost his wedding ring, in Marina Bay of all places. A dive - with a metal detector - had to be summoned to resurface the lost ring. It is unknown whether this succeeded, on the evening of Abu Dhabi.
