Will Sargeant get a new contract? "I don't see any problems!
- Ludo van Denderen
While 19 drivers have left on holiday with peace of mind, one is still uncertain about his future: Logan Sargeant has an expiring contract at Williams, and the team still has not let us know whether the American will get a second chance in Formula 1.
At the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, Sargeant failed to score any points, so his total remains at a paltry one after 22 Grand Prix weekends. His teammate Alex Albon managed to exploit the Williams' potential much better. The Thai captured 27 points, and as a result, the British team managed to finish seventh among constructors.
Another remarkable fact: Albon is the only driver who managed to stay ahead of his teammate in all qualifying in 2023. The last time anyone managed that in Formula 1 was Max Verstappen in 2020. The driver who beat Verstappen no less than 17 times then was? Right, Alex Albon. The Thai now has his revenge, although Sargeant will be a lot less happy about it.
Sargeant believes in a return to the F1 grid
Moreover, such a defeat against your teammate certainly does not strengthen the negotiating position. Team boss James Vowles ultimately has to tie the knot and it may happen in the near future. Sargeant - despite a difficult debut year - is confident that he will be allowed to stay on.
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the American said, "To be honest, I don't know. I feel in terms of racing everything has improved a lot. I'm just trying to do my job the best I can. Given how things have been going lately, I don't see any problems [for a longer stay]," Sargeant stated.
