Good news for Hamilton: 'Stolen' trophy recovered
- Ludo van Denderen
Mercedes will soon be able to put Lewis Hamilton's trophy he received for third place in the F1 championship on display. The FIA has repossessed the trophy after it was taken by an enthusiastic fan after the Prize Giving Gala in Azerbaijan. The man later showed off the gem on X, saying he got the trophy from Hamilton.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. Mercedes came out with a statement saying that Hamilton had left the trophy with the officials so they could send it to the team, as often happens after an award ceremony. The team also denied that Hamilton had gifted the trophy to anyone.
'Misunderstanding with Hamilton'
Following the German team's statement, the 'thief' revealed that it was all a misunderstanding and he was really under the impression that Hamilton gave him the trophy as a gift. The man has since deactivated his account on X, reportedly because of the many hate messages he was sent.
In any case, the trophy is back in the possession of the FIA. The motorsport federation will ensure that the prize is still shipped to team headquarters soon.
