Today marks a staggering 10 years since Michael Schumacher was seriously injured in his tragic skiing accident in Maribel, France. Still, the seven-time world champion is regarded as one of the very best [if not the very best] drivers of all time. Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo fondly remembers the day of the Formula One legend's tragic accident.

Speaking to La gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian said: "I was in the office in Maranello. I got the news through Stefano Lai, who was in charge of communications at the time. At that time, we didn't have a good idea of what had happened. We thought he might have broken two legs."

Schumacher's tragic accident

That was not the case. Schumacher had suffered serious injuries in his skiing accident. He was then immediately put into a coma by doctors. It took six months for the seven-time world champion to come out of that coma. Meanwhile, it is still not known how the former Ferrari driver is doing.

Montezemolo also remembers when he heard it was really bad news for Schumacher: "After a few minutes, the news became clearer to us, and then we started to worry. Look, the less I talk about it, the better it is for me, because it was a terrible day."
