Allison doesn't like the new cars: 'Don't think Verstappen enjoys it'
Since the changes to the regulations in 2022, many people have been critical of the new cars. James Allison, Mercedes' technical director, is one of those people. He thinks even Max Verstappen, who won 19 of 22 races in 2023, will not be able to fully enjoy the car.
Introduced in 2022, the cars received a lot of criticism after winter testing that year. The cars suffered from so-called 'porpoising', the bouncing effect that current Formula 1 cars suffered from at the start. This was largely solved by adjustments to the new regulations.
Allison questions whether Verstappen enjoys new cars
Allison's criticism is about something else. You can play a little less with the set-ups because of how the new cars are put together. Speaking to Motorsport-Total.com, the Brit even says he doesn't think Verstappen can fully enjoy the car either: "A driver wins the championship by one of the biggest margins in history, so he has every reason to love this car. But I wonder if he's saying it's a great car. It's not what it was a few years ago."
