It had been in the air for a while, but is now official: Formula 1 will have a Grand Prix in Madrid. Formula 1 announced this, under the watchful eye of CEO Stefano Domenicali, at a press conference in the Spanish capital on Tuesday. The race will be run on a street circuit at the so-called IFEMA grounds.

Formula 1 is set to descend on Madrid for ten years. For one driver on the current F1 grid, this is very good news, namely Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari driver was born in Madrid and thus gets a race in his home city. The contract starts from 2026 and lasts until 2035.

Barcelona wants to keep GP too

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which has hosted Formula 1 for many years, still has a commitment with Formula One Management until the 2026 season. The owners of this circuit are hopeful that their contract will be extended and thus two races will be held on Spanish soil in the future.
