Sergio Perez's finest F1 victories
27 January at 12:00

Yesterday was Sergio Perez's birthday. The Red Bull driver turned 34. Although the Mexican has had difficult moments at the Red Bull team, he has certainly had his successes too. GPBlog lists three great races by Perez.

Azerbaijan 2023

A supreme weekend for the Mexican. On the streets of Baku, he managed to win both the sprint race and the main race. This was the first time he managed to take both victories in one weekend. He started the sprint race from second place. On the eighth lap of the sprint, he managed to overtake Leclerc at the first corner, after using DRS on the long stretch. In the race itself, Checo Perez started from P3. Because Verstappen went into the pits just before the Safety Car entered the track, the Mexican managed to come out of the Safety Car period in first place. He managed to beat the Dutchman by a difference of 2.1 seconds. The difference between Verstappen and third place was over 19 seconds. A fine piece of teamwork from the Red Bull team.

Monaco 2022

Round seven of the 2022 season. It was a long wait in Monaco where the rain was relentless. More than an hour after the race should have started, it actually did. A 1-2 from Ferrari's team saw Leclerc on pole and Sergio Perez in third. Leclerc was asked to come into the pit lane, when this was not the intention at all. The Monegasque was sent back onto the track on the hard tyres. The loss of time in the pit lane brought Leclerc back into fourth place, behind Perez, Sainz and Verstappen. An accident by Mick Schumacher caused the red flag to be waved. Ferrari stayed on the hard tyre, Red Bull went to mediums. Although things got tricky for Perez at the end, he managed to win the race. The third ever race victory for the Mexican, after which a fierce celebration took place.

Sakhir 2020

The Covid season saw the Sakhir Grand Prix happen for the first and only time. This is on the same circuit on which the Bahrain Grand Prix is run, but with a different layout. Because of some COVID issues, Russell drove for Mercedes instead of Hamilton. Jack Aitken got the chance at Williams as a result. Pietro Fittipaldi drove for the Haas team after Romain Grosjean had an accident a week earlier.

Sergio started in fifth place but soon fell to last place after Leclerc, Verstappen and thus Perez hit each other. The first two had to retire from the race. Perez drove on. That's where the race really started for the Mexican. After 20 laps Perez was already in the points, and by the 50th lap everyone had made their pit stops. After this, Perez was in spot nine. After a Virtual Safety Car on lap 54, where everyone went back into the pits except Perez, he was in fifth place. On lap 64, he managed to overtake race leader George Russell after he suffered a puncture. From last place to race winner. Perez succeeded and thus managed to secure his first race victory.
