Alonso gets on well with this F1 driver: "We have a unique relationship"
That Fernando Alonso gets along well with drivers such as Max Verstappen and George Russell is well-known. However, the 42-year-old Spaniard also gets along very well with his teammate, Lance Stroll. Alonso says he has a "unique bond" with his teammate at Aston Martin.
Aston Martin experienced both highs and lows in the 2023 Formula 1 season. The Silverstone-based team started very strongly and Alonso was almost a regular on the podium in the first half of the season. Stroll struggled more with the AMR23 and a podium finish was therefore not in the cards for the Canadian.
Alonso has 'unique bond' with Stroll
The big difference in performance certainly did not have a negative effect on the mutual bond between the two drivers, Alonso told Formula1.com. "I think we have a very unique relationship, I think, in any team that I was working for, and in any team that I know in the current paddock," says the two-time world champion.
He continued: "We talk a lot, we are in contact every week on the telephone, at the factory, at the races, and we try to make sure that we are all in the same direction, and we share many things."
Alonso is particularly impressed with the way Stroll dealt with the setbacks he faced early in the F1 season. The 25-year-old son of team owner Lawrence Stroll was injured in a cycling accident just before the opening race, but appeared at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix despite a broken wrist.
"He's been through some difficulties this year. The car was just changing the behaviour a little bit, and he was just struggling a little bit more than me, and now I think we fixed a few things in the car and now he's back to the top form. It was impressive to see his dedication and his motivation in the highs and in the lows," Alonso said.
