Mario Andretti emotional after rejecting F1: 'Am absolutely devastated'
- Ludo van Denderen
Mario Andretti is never shy for words. A conversation with the 1978 Formula One world champion is usually a string of great anecdotes and outspoken opinions. This Wednesday, the 83-year-old and his son Michael were told that Formula 1 will not allow Andretti Global access to the F1 grid, and with that, the American has managed to keep quiet.
Via X, Andretti reacts to the news, but it is not a comprehensive response: "I'm devastated. I won't say anything else because I can't find any other words besides devastated," the motorsport legend states.

Waiting for reaction Michael Andretti
GPblog has asked Andretti Global for a comment, but Michael Andretti has not yet responded to Formula One's announcement. The team's X account is also silent for now.
At least from 2025 to 2027, Andretti is not welcome with its own F1 team. Earlier, the FIA did give approval, but the FOM does not see enough value in adding a new team to the grid at the moment. However, Andretti may make another attempt in the future, to still be admitted in 2028. Indeed, Formula 1 sees more value for the team from the moment General Motors (with Cadillac) wants to make its entrance as Andretti's engine supplier.
