'Hamilton should have gone to Red Bull if he wants to be champion'
- Ludo van Denderen
Lewis Hamilton has a burning ambition to become an eighth-time Formula One world champion. His move to Ferrari is undoubtedly partly motivated by the thought that he will not reach that milestone with Mercedes. But will he succeed with Ferrari?
It's a bit of an open door, but Martin Brundle sees two possible scenarios: "If he could go to Ferrari and do a Michael Schumacher and help turn it all around so they can start winning races and World Championships that'll be wonderful as long as he doesn't go there and do a Fernando Alonso or Sebastian Vettel," Brundle told Sky News.
The adventures of Alonso and Vettel were not a success, although the Spaniard was close to the championship with the Scuderia in 2012 and 2013. Hamilton will no doubt also realise that Ferrari - although the only one to snatch a Grand Prix victory from Red Bull in 2023 - is not yet a constant threat to the Austrian team.
Was Red Bull not an option for Hamilton?
That's why Brundle says: "You'd look at Red Bull and say well that's where he should have gone if he wants to win more titles rather than Ferrari at the moment but I don't think that was necessarily an option. We've got a big reset coming in 2026 with the car and the power unit and remember a lot of us were surprised when Lewis left McLaren to go to Mercedes-Benz."
"But they, through Ross Brawn and others, demonstrated to Lewis by saying 'hey when this reset comes in 2014 we think we're ahead of the game', and is he doing the same thing again?”
