Aston Martin confirms: 'We want to sign this driver for 2025'
- Ludo van Denderen
Aston Martin have had a strong season, with eight podium finishes. A victory has not yet been achieved for the British team. With Fernando Alonso, the team hope to have more success in 2024. The Spaniard has an expiring contract at Aston Martin and is said to be interested in Mercedes. But it is not even certain yet that the two-time world champion wants to extend his career in F1 at all.
Regardless, Aston Martin have the task of securing a driver (and depending on Lance Stroll's situation, perhaps two) for 2025. Mike Krack, the Silverstone-based team boss, already has someone in mind to fill one of the seats. His name is not entirely surprising: Fernando Alonso.
Aston Martin would be honoured with Alonso
"Yes, I think the silly season has started much earlier than we were anticipating," the Luxembourger told the media, including GPblog. "We knew that it was always going to be an exciting year with a lot of speculation, but to be honest, we love Fernando. We have a very good relationship with Fernando. We have a relationship he's an integral member of the team. We have a relationship that is based on trust and openness, and we would be delighted honestly to continue with Fernando into 2025 and years after."
Alonso already indicated he feels fit enough to be active at the top of motorsport. In the coming period, he wants to decide for himself whether he wants to be active in Formula 1 beyond this season. Alonso does not rule out competing in another racing class.
