Perez doesn't need to pack his things yet: 'He has performed well'
At the Bahrain Grand Prix, the final difference between Red Bull Racing teammates Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez was a whopping more than 22 seconds at the end of the race. Nevertheless, team prinicpal Christian Horner is happy with this difference and Perez does not need to pack his things at Red Bull for the time being.
Sergio Perez has been facing a difficult challenge for years, namely keeping up with or even trying to beat his three-time world champion teammate Max Verstappen. Over the past three seasons in which they have been teammates, the Mexican always performed a little worse than Verstappen. During the race in Bahrain, the gap between the two ended up being 22.457 seconds. This result was good for second place for the Mexican, though.
Christian Horner satisfied with Sergio Perez
Despite this big gap, team principal Christian Horner is pleased with Perez. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Briton says this result is good enough at the moment. ''Well, he's got to keep performing like he did today. He started 5th, but he came through the field, made a couple of good passes and drove a strong race. It’s the optimum result that you can have as a team, and they not that easy to do.''
There has been speculation for ages that Sergio Perez is not good enough for Red Bull Racing. Especially if the field is going to get closer together, it is important that the Mexican can consistently secure the second spot. The 34-year-old's contract still runs until the end of this season. His performance in the upcoming races will be crucial for a contract extension.
