Will Verstappen go to Mercedes? This is what Karun Chandhok expects!
- Ludo van Denderen
Suddenly, a rumour started circulating that, until recently, no one would have thought could be true. But with the turmoil within Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen is suddenly being linked with a spot at Mercedes. Karun Chandhok, former F1 driver and now an analyst at Sky Sports, does not see it happening any time soon.
The talk about Verstappen's possible departure from Red Bull is because of his Jos' now famous outburst about team boss Christian Horner. Max Verstappen's father told the media he feared the Austrian team was falling apart because of Horner. Max Verstappen did not want to comment on these statements on Wednesday, but the driver certainly did not attack his father.
'Jos wants the best for Max'
"Jos Verstappen’s first loyalty is going to lie with his son. He and ultimately, above everything else, as a father, wants what's best for Max. What's best for Max is to have him in the best car possible, winning lots of world championships, and carrying on this journey that he's on at the moment. So, despite all of the stuff that came out, and it exploded all over the internet on Monday, I don't believe that Max is looking to go to Mercedes," Chandhok told Sky Sports.
On the other hand, the former F1 driver admits that anything can happen in Formula 1. For instance, Chandhok also states that he never expected Lewis Hamilton to switch to Ferrari. But in the end, the former driver suspects that Red Bull is committed to making peace internally and keeping Verstappen for the team. "I think they're trying to just focus attention back on track," concluded Chandhok.
