Formula 1 drivers in off-weeks

The Formula 1 calendar seems to get fuller by the year so there is little time for drivers to rest. Mercedes' George Russell explains how it all works in such an off-week. There may be no Formula 1 on TV, but it's not that the drivers have nothing to do.

"The track is the tip of the iceberg, factory work is so important. That's where everyone is aware of the car's performance," says Russell, who goes on to explain that sleep rhythms often don't really correspond with the itinerary. "Take Australia as an example. I landed back in London at midnight, but I'd rather stay on a more easterly schedule than switch back to GMT and then in a couple of weeks travel nine hours to Japan again."

Still, Russell dives into the gym

Russell explains that a Formula One driver's physical exertion does not diminish. "I usually do a double session (in the gym, ed.) every day when I get home until the Monday of the next race week. From that point of view, the week goes by pretty quickly. "

"We always have breakfast and lunch together (in the factory, ed.)," says the 26-year-old Mercedes driver. Meanwhile, data and car developments are exchanged. "In the world we live in, the eyes are always forward," Russell reveals.
