Four times Sebastian Vettel won the Formula 1 world drivers' championship, 53 times he crossed the finish line first at a Grand Prix. Why he could not improve on these numbers is mostly down to Mercedes. Or rather, the seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. For years, the Briton was Vettel's main rival, who could not match similar success with Ferrari after his time at Red Bull Racing. Hamilton will try next season what Vettel never succeeded in doing: winning the world title with Ferrari.

The big question is going to be how much can Hamilton achieve with Ferrari, especially if Red Bull's current dominance continues? "I think it’s about the team everywhere you go," Vettel told Sky News about Hamilton's chances of winning his eighth title. "I think it is a team sport, and I think someone like Lewis, has said that over and over again, thanking the team around him."

"And I think without Mercedes, Lewis’ career would have been different. Mine too. But that’s how it goes. No regrets," the four-time world champion said jokingly.

"But yes, I think time will tell [if he will be successful with Ferrari]," Vettel added.

Vettel understands Hamilton's enthusiasm

This season, Hamilton is still driving for Mercedes, a team in a down period. Meanwhile, Ferrari seems to be getting stronger and stronger. Vettel understands that Hamilton is looking forward to his new challenge. "I think if he is excited, that’s the main thing, it was ultimately his decision and he took it for himself, so best of luck. I know the team at Ferrari, and obviously for us, for the outside, the measure is whether you are successful or not, but the real measure is whether Lewis is happy or not."
