Perez on betting within Red Bull: 'Marko and Horner, everyone does it'
Sergio Perez explained in China ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix that bets are often made amongst themselves within Red Bull. Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and Perez himself all take part, the Mexican driver revealed. A few weeks ago, it was already revealed that Perez had to pay money to Bernie Ecclestone due to a bet with Horner.
Perez and Horner had made a bet before qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix. Horner bet with Perez that he would not make the front row of the grid, and Perez thought he could. Perez ended qualifying on P2, forcing Horner to transfer money. None other than Ecclestone benefited from this mutual bet.
Perez: 'Betting as a kind of team building'
Asked Perez how often bets are made within Red Bull, the Guadalajara-based driver responded sternly. "[We do it] often. We like to bet as some sort of team bonding exercise," Perez frankly admitted in China. Next weekend, the Chinese Grand Prix is on the programme. In the meantime, have Perez and his bosses made some bets?
"So far, there's no bet. Let's see if Christian comes up with one," Perez said with a laugh. Not only Horner, but also Marko participates in betting on the Red Bull driver's sporting achievements. "Well, they're all gambling on the weekend between them. There are always bets going on around."
