Verstappen speaks out on Alonso contract extension

Fernando Alonso has announced he will race for Aston Martin for two more years, meaning the Aston Martin driver will still be racing in Formula 1 at 45. Max Verstappen expresses his admiration for the Spaniard ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Verstappen has a current contract until 2028 at Red Bull racing. The three-time world champion makes no secret of the fact that he isn't sure about staying in F1 beyond that contract deal. The chances of Verstappen still being active in the top class of motorsport at 45 therefore seem nil. He elaborates on that himself.

Verstappen admires Alonso's determination

Verstappen comments on Fernando's attidude and passion. "Fernando also took a bit of time out and then probably found his love again to be fully competitive in Formula 1. So it's just very difficult to comment on these kind of things. I don't think I will be here until I'm 45. But you never know," the Dutchman said.

Asked whether Verstappen is surprised that Alonso has signed a new contract, the reigning world champion replied: "No, but also I don't have all the insights. They [Aston Martin] have a good relationship with him. They know each other as well. And you don't know what they're talking about in the meantime and how the prospects are within the team. So for me, it's always very difficult also to really comment about it. But clearly they are very ambitious. They want to win in F1. And he believes in the project. So then it makes sense to sign."
