Verstappen top at Red Bull: 'But can he do the same at another team?'

Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok were full of admiration: they watched Max Verstappen excel in Shanghai at the Chinese Grand Prix, where really no one could come close to the Red Bull Racing driver. In the end, the two former drivers were short of superlatives to describe the Dutchman's performance.

"We don’t know how much he has in hand. He is managing at the front at the moment. But clearly, Checo is not as quick in a race or in qualifying, and Checo is a good driver, so, yes, he [Verstappen] is amazing," Hill said on Sky Sports after the Chinese Grand Prix.

"There's no question, I mean, people are already talking about him as being established in our minds as one of the great Formula One drivers of all time, and I can't argue with that. I mean, he's got the equipment, yes, he's got the equipment, because he was so blindingly, obviously, quick, and aggressive, and competitive, and also, on top of everything, mentally, he knows where he's at, he knows what's going on, he doesn't need much help, and he's got a great team behind him to help him, even on top of everything else. So, he's almost indestructible at the moment."

Chandhok keen to see Verstappen at Mercedes

For now, Verstappen has celebrated all his successes with the same team. Drivers like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton managed to be the best with two different teams. Karun Chandhok would like to see Verstappen with another team, to find out if the Dutchman can repeat what he is currently doing with Red Bull.

"More and more, I'd like to see him drive for somebody else, because I'd like to see whether this question you're talking about, right, is it just, he's at one with that car, could someone else jump in and do it, if he went to Mercedes, or Ferrari, I don't know, he's not going to look at Ferrari now they're locked in, but it would be fun to see, wouldn't it, is how much of it is Max versus…, I just wonder," Chandhok said.
