The starting grid

The 'qualifying monster', as he is sometimes characterised, Charles Leclerc will start alongside Verstappen. Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez qualified in P3, who was just a bit faster than Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian was hugely pleased with his P4.

It was a dramatic shootout for the Mercedes team. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both failed to get into SQ3 and will have to make do with P11 and P12 on Saturday. Alexander Albon will start at the very back, as the man who is often associated with Red Bull failing to get through SQ1 in Miami. Oscar Piastri leads the McLaren drivers in P6 and P9. Lance Stroll out-qualified Fernando Alonso.

Sprint Format in 2024

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix will be the first time an F1 sprint race has been held at that venue. As was the case in the last Grand Prix weekend in China, the sprint format will saw one practice session on Friday, followed by qualifying for the sprint race. The sprint race will then be the first bit of on track action on Saturday. The rest of the weekend then uses the traditional format of Formula 1 with Saturday afternoon qualifying and Sunday's Grand Prix. Click here to see the full schedule.

When is the next race on American soil?
