New development in Newey drama: 'Mercedes cautiously approaching him'
- Tygo Bekkema
Ever since Adrian Newey announced his departure from Red Bull Racing, much has been said and written about the British engineer's future. Although Ferrari still seems to be ahead in the race for his signature, Mercedes are also still interested in the former Red Bull technical head.
German medium Auto Motor und Sport recently reported that Mercedes are making an attempt to bring Newey to Brackley after all. "It was heard in Miami that Mercedes were no longer giving Newey the cold shoulder. There is a cautious approach," the outlet stated. With new regulations looming in 2026, Mercedes hopes to fight their way back to the top of the Formula 1 world. Mercedes' last victory dates back to 2022, when George Russell was the best at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Talks with Ferrari at 'advanced' stage
So while Mercedes is still trying to entice Newey, Auto Motor und Sport acknowledges that it will be difficult to actually achieve. "Mercedes' reaching out may possibly be late. The star designer's discussions with Ferrari are apparently well advanced."
