Oscar Piastri has lost his second place on the grid. The Australian has been punished by the stewards for getting in the way of Kevin Magnussen during qualifying in Imola. Piastri has a three-place grid penalty.
Piastri starts the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in fifth place. According to the stewards, McLaren is primarily to blame for receiving that punishment. The stewards listened to the Australian's onboard radio and concluded that his team warned him far too late about the oncoming Magnussen. Other teams always warned their drivers in time, the stewards said.
A big speed difference between Magnussen and Piastri
The telemetry showed that the speed difference between Piastri and Magnussen was around 140 kilometres per hour. Furthermore, the Dane was only forty to fifty meters behind Piastri, who was driving in the middle of the circuit. The stewards therefore had no choice but to punish the McLaren youngster. He loses his second place and now Lando Norris will be on the front row, next to Verstappen.
Ferrari is undoubtedly happy with Piastri's punishment. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz each also move up one place. They now form the second row.
