Is the pressure mounting on Perez? 'He needs to step up a gear'
- Estéban den Toom
Former Formula 1 driver Jan Lammers believes Sergio Perez at Red Bull needs to step up his game now. The competition for Max Verstappen and his team seems to be closing in, which means Perez will also have to provide more points if Red Bull wants to keep a view on the constructors' championship.
Red Bull is still the leader in the Formula 1 teams' championship. Because Verstappen scored 161 points, and Perez 107, Red Bull comes to a points total of 268. Ferrari is 56 points behind Red Bull. McLaren also seems to be a serious candidate for the title, as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have scored quite a few points. They stand at a total of 154.
Lammers: 'Perez needs to step up a gear'
"Perez really needs to step up a gear, he can do that, let's not forget he was faster than Verstappen during the first free practice on Friday. He can do something, but he doesn't always get it out," Lammers explained in the NOS podcast.
Lammers' conclusion for the Mexican is harsh. "But Perez has to step up a gear otherwise they are going to have to work hard for the constructors' championship," he concludes. This weekend the Monaco Grand Prix is on the programme in Formula 1, when the drivers will have another chance to collect points.
