What makes Verstappen faster than the rest? 'That makes us very dangerous'
- Nicole Mulder
History has repeatedly proven that only a fast driver, or only a fast car, is not enough to win in Formula 1. Yet, in the end, the best drivers often make the difference when conditions are similar for everyone. How does Max Verstappen - even in less-than-ideal conditions - often manage to win anyway?
What makes Verstappen faster than the rest?
Faced with the question of what makes him faster than the rest, Verstappen replied, "I find that really difficult to comment on. I can just speak from my experience in Formula One where I think, over time, you have a lot more experience, I think you know how to handle certain situations a bit better," the Red Bull Racing driver begins.
"Plus, being at the front for quite a few years as a team, the way we operate, I think it can make a difference to teams that are trying to chase that, and we just tried to stay calm and collected. We know that in the last few races teams have been catching up or have beaten us, so, of course, we want to try and improve as well," he continued.
"I do think, with the experience that we've had over the last couple of years, it makes us a very tough team to beat in a championship because we don't make many mistakes, and naturally you try to always optimise everything. In general, you keep on learning, you keep on trying to be better, but I think that does make us very dangerous in a championship fight," Verstappen explained.
Albon speaks from experience
As a former teammate of Verstappen, Alex Albon knows better than anyone where the Dutchman managed to make the difference. "I would say mostly the first thing was the feeling of being up to speed all the time. I think from the first lap you see it. Even in FP1s, there's quite a big push on for Max to set purples early on, and he's just quick," the Williams driver says.
"I think there's not anything to it, it's something that we all strive for, it’s not having weaknesses, and whenever you do have a weakness, you work on it and try to get rid of it. I think Max has got an area where you can’t really find that edge, so it makes it difficult," Albon said.
