Lando Norris reaction after FP2

Here's why Lando Norris thinks qualifying in Monaco will be difficult

24 May at 18:59

Lando Norris tells Sky Sports that he had a 'reasonable' first day on the streets of Monte Carlo. The Brit finished FP1 in fourth place and FP2 in fifth place and is still hopeful McLaren, who are adorning a Aytron Senna tribute livery this weekend, are still in the mix for their second race victory of the season.

Confidence is high in the McLaren garage after some positive results in recent weeks. In fact, in the last three Grands Prix, Norris has finished second-first-second. However, Friday practice results in Monaco suggest it will be difficult for the Brit to keep that streak up. Norris points out that there are some areas McLaren needs to work on in order to succeed this weekend.

"We look good out there, but not in the sense of speed," says Norris. "I think we're not bad at all. It's always tricky around here. So first of all, it's just nice to be back and driving around this track because it's as chaotic as it always is and as typical as it always is. But, it's a reasonable first day. Definitely lacking a little bit compared to Charles and the Ferrari. Maybe the Mercedes, they've been very quick as well. I think everyone's tighter just because it's a small track and an abnormal track. But we're up there, we have a little bit to find. I think it's going to be a difficult day tomorrow, but we're in the pipe, so that's the main thing."

What will McLaren look to improve?

The Miami Grand Prix winner knows exactly what McLaren needs to do in order to reel in their competitors. "The main thing you want around here is low-speed grip. Trying to change the balance and get a nice balance to help that. Ride also. The better the car can go over the bumps and also softer it can feel, the better it feels. But it's a trade-off, if you try to do that too much, you lose overall performance and vice versa, it's complicated. We tried a few things today, so hopefully we can understand."

Saturday's shootout is set to be a fight between several drivers and teams. Norris will be hoping to be one of those drivers in the mix for pole position tomorrow.
