Debate | Red Bull should bring Adrian Newey back from his gardening leave
- GPblog.com
There he stood again. In his everyday attire. The notebook characterising him was firmly pressed under his arm. Adrian Newey now does not have much influence on Red Bull. Since the chief technical officer announced his departure from the Austrian team, he has been quiet. Shouldn't Red Bull say: 'We are in a tricky situation at the moment; gardening leave or not: Adrian, work with us until the end of your contract?'
In Formula 1, it is normal for someone who leaves the organisation to sit at home for a compulsory period before starting work elsewhere. This is not a mandatory rule, it is something perpetuated by the F1 teams themselves. Indeed, they are far too afraid that the leaver will take intellectual property to their competitors. On the other hand, during the gardening leave, the team member is still paid to sit at home.
Should Red Bull temporarily bring back Newey?
In recent weeks, Red Bull Racing has been struggling. Right now, the genius Newey might be able to help the team, but because of his gardening leave, the Brit is no longer involved in anything. Shouldn't that be different in this case? Perhaps Newey will then take certain knowledge with him to his next employer, but wouldn't he do that anyway, as Chief Technical Officer? Someone like Newey himself could figure out what his (former) colleagues are now trying to do with the RB20?
