Sunday's opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix was chaotic, with the two Haas cars colliding with Red Bull's Sergio Perez. With the damage caused, all three drivers were left out of the race. For Nico Hulkenberg, he seemed surprise no further action was being taken. Now, he says the team must also look ahead to Montreal.

Speaking to GPblog and others in the paddock the Haas driver was asked whether he could understand why his team mate, Kevin Magnussen, decided to try and pull an overtake on Perez at that moment: "Yes, of course, but nobody has won a Monaco Grand Prix on lap 1, so you have to take calculated risks and risks that make sense. It's always that risk reward question that you have to question yourself."

The German's team mate is just two penalty points away from an automatic race ban which is imposed when a driver reached 12 points on their superlicence. Although many expected Magnussen to be awarded these points on Sunday, the stewards decided no further action was to be taken.

'These things happen'

Upon finding out no action was being taken, Hulkenberg appeared surpised: "Is it? I have no idea." He added: "I think to some extent it is definitely a racing incident, lap 1, street circuit, narrow, visibility is poor. It's not always exactly knowing where the other car is and these things happen, unfortuantely."

The Haas driver, who is set to leave the team at the end of the season and make the move to Sauber, is now focusing on the next race, Montreal. "We all invest a lot of energy and time and it's just frustrating these Sundays. We've just got to wipe it off and look ahead to Montreal."
