Debate Are Red Bull right to give Perez a new deal?

It's official: Sergio Perez has signed a new two-year contract to stay at Red Bull Racing, and will remain at the team until at least the end of the 2026 season. However, the Mexican is coming off of two disappointing results, and many team principals and drivers have referred to Red Bull as 'Max Verstappen' in their quest to challenge the Austrian team in the Constructors' Championship. After a promising start to the season, Perez has once again had a tough two Grands Prix as the Formula One season entered the European part of the calendar. Starting the year with two P2 finishes behind Max Verstappen, and bounced back after a poorer weekend in Australia with a second in Japan, the Mexican did everything the team should ask for: bring the car home behind the defending champion.

Yet, in Imola, Perez first failed to qualify for Q3 in Imola, then he even failed to reach Q2 in Monaco, at the circuits, where starting position is key. He also made a mistake finding the gravel trap in Rivazza that made him missing out on at least challenging the two Mercedes cars in Imola, then his Monaco Grand Prix already ended in Sector 1 after a crash with Kevin Magnussen.

A new contract can definitely take some pressure of 'Checo', as now, the only thing he needs to worry about is once again is be there behind his Dutch teammate. On the other hand, that challenge is now significantly higher with Ferrari and McLaren closing the gap to Red Bull, at least on certain layouts.
